Jan K. Genemans

This page will tell you a little about me, most of it will probably bore you to tears, as it contains a short family history as well as a few of my interests and hobbies.

History:
I was born in Washington, DC in the summer of 1967 to a pair of immigrants who came from Holland and Germany. I am also the first born with a single brother nearly two years junior to me. Since my father worked in construction, during my childhood we moved a lot, and lived throughout Northern and Central Virginia, as well as parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland. As a result I went to 10 different schools, never more than 2 yrs at a stretch until college. I was fortunate enough to obtain a full scholarship at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, where I finally stayed at one school long enough to finish all four years of schooling and obtain a degree in Marine Transportation.

Since I have graduated from the US Merchant Marine Academy, I have predominately been sailing on US Flag Merchant Ships of various types, and have seen a good portion of the world, more than most people would see in a lifetime. I hold an unlimited Master's license. I have sailed from 1991 to the present.

On a personal note, I have been happily married since spring 2003.

Hobbies & Interests:
Obviously one of my hobbies is computers (hence the fairly extensive web page design) from which I have been playing around with from 1979 on the TRS-80 model I with 4 kilobytes of RAM and a cassette tape drive through my current machine a 5-year old P-II 300 notebook which is running Windows 98SE with 256MB of RAM ( 64,000x the RAM of the old TRS-80) and a 20gig HD.

I also have been on the internet for a majority of this time in one form or another since September 1986 (over 17 years) initially lurking on the UseNet newsgroups before they became filled with SPAM before surfing the net, hanging out in IRC, mailing lists, ICQ, AOL IM, among other areas.

Other than computers, my hobbies include digital photography, power-boating, sail-boating, flying gliders, woodworking, gourmet cooking, gardening, shady tree mechanic among many other activities that I enjoy doing.

As far as sports are concerned, I enjoy SCUBA, volleyball, softball, canoeing, white water rafting, mountain climbing, hiking, camping, shooting, swimming, and bicycling. I don't enjoy participating in contact sports, even though I enjoy watching them.

I also enjoy listening to music of all types, except rap and slow opera. The music forms that I enjoy the most are country, rock, classical and jazz but also enjoy listening to various other types of music as well.

As far as television & movies go, I predominately watch science fiction, action/adventure, comedy, and good dramas.
